Filing Your Taxes
Filing your taxes in South Africa may seem daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. With the South African Revenue Service (SARS) offering digital tools and clear guidelines, the process is now easier than ever. Follow this step-by-step guide to file your taxes with confidence:
1. Determine if You Need to File
Not everyone is required to file a tax return. Generally, if you earn below the annual tax threshold or have no additional income (like rental or investment income), you may be exempt. For the 2023/2024 tax year, the threshold is R95,750 for individuals under 65.
2. Register with SARS
If you’re a first-time taxpayer, you need to register with SARS. You can do this online via the eFiling platform or by visiting your nearest SARS branch.
3. Gather Your Documentation
Ensure you have the following:
- Your IRP5/IT3(a) forms from your employer(s)
- Certificates for medical aid contributions and retirement annuities
- Proof of expenses for work-related deductions (if applicable)
- Details of any additional income and supporting documents
4. Access SARS eFiling
Log in to your SARS eFiling account. If you don’t have one, create an account at www.sarsefiling.co.za. eFiling allows you to submit your tax return online, check your status, and even make payments.
5. Complete Your Tax Return (ITR12)
Once logged in, navigate to the “Returns Issued” section and open your ITR12 form. SARS often pre-populates some fields using third-party data. Review this information carefully and fill in any missing details.
6. Claim Deductions and Rebates
Maximize your tax savings by claiming allowable deductions such as:
- Medical expenses not covered by your medical aid
- Contributions to a retirement annuity
- Travel expenses (if you’re eligible for a travel allowance)
7. Submit and Verify
After completing your return, submit it electronically. SARS may request supporting documents, so ensure you have them ready. You can upload these via eFiling if required.
8. Await Your Assessment
SARS will issue an assessment (ITA34), which summarizes your tax calculation. Review it carefully. If you disagree, you can file a dispute within the prescribed time frame.
Filing your taxes correctly ensures compliance and peace of mind. Don’t hesitate to consult a tax professional if you’re unsure about any part of the process.
